Niall Cummins to join squad in July

On top of announcing that a host of last season’s promotion-winning stars were returning to represent the club for 2022/23, we are delighted to add to that list with former Marine striker, Niall Cummins.

Cummins, 35, represented the Mariners from December 2018, scoring 44 goals in 102 games in the Northern Premier League (NPL) and, as club-captain, assisted in Marine’s promotion to the Premier Division with a 2-1 win in the play-off final in April.

Niall will be most famously remembered for scoring a 120th-minute winner in the second round of the 2020/21 FA Cup to beat Havant & Waterlooville and set up a mouth-watering home tie with Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur. It was only the second time a team from the eighth tier had reached the third round, before losing 5-0 to Spurs with the crowd only able to watch from home due to returning Covid restrictions.

No stranger to the area, Niall previously featured for Curzon Ashton and had this to say when we caught up with him this week: “Delighted to be hooking up with Andy and the team here at Bury AFC. I have watched on with interest at the developments with the club, and having spoken to the staff about bringing me in, I am very much looking forward to getting to work with the lads when we return for pre-season training.”

The gaffer was equally delighted to have Niall onboard for 2022/23: “He is a player with undoubted quality from a much higher level. A leader, but speaking to him the best thing is he comes with great character. That character will add to this group and push us forward for the coming season.

We may not have had many additions over the summer so far, but as we look to do with every signing, it is important that the ones that do come in not only add to the group as a player, but as a person also. Understanding how we want to play as a team is only part of playing for this club. How we are in around the ground, in and around the fans, is just as important and Niall will give us plenty in that department.

“Niall is a real coup, he was captain and won promotion last season, so this is a fantastic signing for us. We are really looking forward to working with Niall and welcoming his family to the football club.”

Niall joins Matty Williams, Jimmy Moore, Jake Kenny, captain Jonno Hunt, Kris Holt, Chris Rowney and Ben Wharton in returning for pre-season training, alongside Jack Atkinson and Lewis Gilboy who recently extended their contracts for the 2022/23 season.

We look forward to seeing them all in action again soon!
