Bury AFC: Helping Shape the Future of Football

We wanted to share some of the discussions we’ve been involved in recently and ask for your views and opinions to help us shape the future of football in this country.

On Sunday evening we agreed to become part of Fair Game, an organisation aiming to change the way football is governed. You can read our press release here, along with the full press release from Fair Game here.

This is part of our commitment as a club to not simply reflect on the problems Bury fans have endured in recent years, but provide practical ideas and solutions about how football might be reformed to avoid other clubs suffering a similar fate. We were proud to be asked to join, and stand shoulder to shoulder with clubs such as AFC Wimbledon, Cambridge United, Grimsby Town, Luton Town, Newport County AFC, Exeter City FC and Accrington Stanley as members.

Yesterday, we were asked to provide evidence to the Government’s fan-led review of football governance, chaired by Tracey Crouch MP. You can view the other panel members here and the Terms of Reference here.

We offered a number of recommendations but intend to follow this up with a further written submission. We would like to invite you to contribute your own recommendations either by email to shakerscommunity@buryafc.uk or by posting your comments below. We will review all suggestions and attempt to incorporate them in our feedback provided they meet the requirements of the Terms of Reference.

Finally, we met with Nigel Huddleston, Minister for Sport and Tourism, today at the National Football Museum, along with supporter representatives from Bolton Wanderers and Manchester United. We stressed the importance of the fan-led review to clubs in the north-west of England given the impact poor governance and unscrupulous owners has already had in this part of the world and stressed this was something which was going to escalate without intervention.

We have advised the panel that only a fundamental change will make a real difference. At the same time we have acknowledged that this change needs to be practical and realistic, if it is to happen at all. This is an opportunity for you to provide your thoughts and ideas, and for them to be heard by government.
