Following on from our first signings announced at the end of last month, the women’s team is starting to take shape. With training sessions being able to resume in recent weeks, a series of trials have taken place and the process of selection is underway to form the first AFC squad for the 2021/22 season.
We are delighted to announce our next four incoming players to vie for slots across the defence and midfield.
25-year-old midfielder Emily Owens signs having played previously for Tier 4 Stockport County Ladies and Leeds United Ladies and returns to play in the town where she grew up: “After years of playing football nothing feels more right than signing for my home team! It’s the start of exciting times with a really strong group of players”, said Emily upon signing on.
She is joined by fellow midfielder Lizzie Lucas, 20, who has played locally for Bury FC Ladies & Walshaw.
At the back, 20-year-old Sophie Jones comes in having spent time at Tier 4 Bolton Wanderers and Wythenshawe Amateurs and alongside her is Kim Burston, 33, who has played in a previous spell at Bury FC Women.
Head of Elite Women’s Team, Casey Lynchey, told us of her delight at securing the next batch of players for the new season: “Emily is such a hard-working midfielder with experience at this level from her time at Stockport & Leeds. Combined with Sophie who has been playing at FAWNL level since she was 16 at Bolton Wanderers, we are introducing strong, fearsome characters into the squad.
“With Lizzie & Kim, they come back into football having had a spell away from the game but wanted to get involved in our exciting adventure from the start and we know about them from their time playing in Bury previously. Both bring plenty to the team and play from the left, which gives us options and a balance to the team”, Casey concluded.
