Incoming: Tony Whitehead

We are delighted to announce that central midfielder Tony Whitehead has agreed to become our 7th signing.

Born in Ireland, Tony started his career at Charlesville AFC before spending six seasons at First Division side Limerick FC, where he made 181 appearances.

In 2018, he left Ireland for Dunedin and signed with Southern United in the New Zealand Premiership. He spent last season at Stalybridge Celtic, where he quickly became a key member of the Northern Premier League club’s team, making a total of 33 appearances.

Manager Andy Welsh was delighted to get this signing completed and commented: “Absolutely over the moon at getting Tony over the line. A player playing in the Northern Premier League last season with Stalybridge, his ability to break play up and control the game from centre midfield is something we will be expecting from him.

“He has high expectations for this season himself and he is a very driven and motivated character which is key to the type of character we want at this club.”

Welsh continued: “We’ve no doubt Tony could have gone higher than the level he was at. He sees this move looking at our end goal and focus of what we want to achieve. This is a big plus with Tony on board, as we continue to build the squad and this addition brings great competition now in the centre of the pitch with Kris Holt and others which will be announced in the coming days.”

We caught up with Tony after signing for the club. He told us: “I’m delighted to be here and have everything over the line. It’s a big project that I’m honoured to be a part of. The size of the club and the fan base that comes with it is something every player wants to be a part of. It’s now up to us to deliver on the pitch. I’m looking forward to working with Andy and the hard work starts now for all of us as a group.

Welcome to the club, Tony!
